Northern Circuit Classic Safari

Pick up from Arusha and drive to Tarangire National Park, famous for its large elephant herds and iconic baobab trees. The park's name comes from the Tarangire River, which provides a lifeline for wildlife during the dry season.

Spend the afternoon on game drives exploring diverse habitats from seasonal swamps to sprawling savannah. Tarangire has one of the highest concentrations of elephants in Africa, and you'll likely see herds of 100+ individuals. The park is also excellent for bird watching with over 550 species recorded.

Keep your eyes peeled for tree-climbing pythons, lions, leopards, and the park's large buffalo population. The ancient baobab trees, some over 1,000 years old, create a dramatic landscape unlike anywhere else in Tanzania.

After breakfast, drive to Lake Manyara National Park, a small but incredibly diverse park nestled at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. Despite its compact size, the park offers remarkable wildlife viewing.

Lake Manyara is famous for its tree-climbing lions—a behavior rarely seen elsewhere. These lions lounge in the branches of acacia trees, possibly to escape biting insects or simply to enjoy the breeze. The park's alkaline lake attracts thousands of flamingos, creating spectacular pink shores.

Explore the park's diverse habitats including groundwater forest, acacia woodland, and open grassland. Watch for large troops of baboons, blue monkeys, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and numerous hippos wallowing in the pools. The park is also a birder's paradise with over 400 species recorded.

In the afternoon, continue to your lodge near Karatu for dinner and overnight.

Early morning departure to Ngorongoro Crater for a full day crater tour. Descend 600 meters into this UNESCO World Heritage Site, often called the "Eighth Wonder of the World." The crater formed when a massive volcano exploded and collapsed over 2 million years ago.

The 260 square kilometer crater floor supports over 25,000 large animals including the Big Five. This is one of the best places in Africa to see the endangered black rhino, with the crater hosting a small but stable population. Large prides of lions patrol the grasslands, and massive elephant bulls wander the crater floor.

The diverse habitats—grasslands, swamps, forests, and a soda lake—support an incredible variety of wildlife. Watch thousands of flamingos on Lake Magadi, hippos wallowing in the Ngoitokitok Springs, and vast herds of buffalo, zebra, and wildebeest grazing the plains.

Enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated site before continuing your crater exploration. Late afternoon, ascend to your lodge on the crater rim where spectacular views await.

After breakfast, journey to the legendary Serengeti National Park, driving through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area with game viewing en route. Stop at Olduvai Gorge, the "Cradle of Mankind," where fossils of early humans have been discovered.

Enter the Serengeti and begin your exploration of this world-famous park. The name "Serengeti" comes from the Maasai word "Siringet" meaning "endless plains"—an apt description for this vast 14,750 square kilometer wilderness.

The Serengeti hosts the Great Migration, where over 2 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebra, and 350,000 gazelle move in an annual cycle following the rains and fresh grass. The timing of your visit will determine where you'll find the herds, but wildlife is abundant year-round.

Arrive at your tented camp in time to relax before an evening game drive. As the sun sets over the savannah, witness predators beginning their nightly hunt.

Rise before dawn for an early morning game drive when predators are most active. Watch lions returning from the hunt, cheetahs surveying the plains from termite mounds, and leopards descending from their tree hideouts.

The Serengeti has the largest lion population in Africa, with over 3,000 individuals. You'll also find all three African big cats—lion, leopard, and cheetah—making this one of the best places on Earth for predator viewing. The park's kopjes (rocky outcrops) are favorite resting spots for lions and leopards.

Return to camp for breakfast before heading out again to explore different areas of the park. Your guide will track wildlife movements and position you for the best viewing opportunities. Depending on the season, you might witness river crossings, calving season, or vast herds stretching to the horizon.

Enjoy a bush picnic lunch surrounded by the sounds and sights of the African wilderness. Continue your safari until sunset, then return to camp for dinner and evening relaxation around the campfire.

Enjoy a final early morning game drive before breakfast, making the most of your last hours in the Serengeti. The soft morning light creates perfect photography conditions and wildlife is at its most active.

After breakfast, begin the journey back to Arusha, with game viewing opportunities along the way. The drive takes you back through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, offering one last chance to spot wildlife in these beautiful highlands.

Arrive in Arusha in the late afternoon for your transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight. Alternatively, extend your safari with additional destinations or relax on the beaches of Zanzibar.
