Route Overview

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa (2,780m)

Begin on the remote western slopes, trekking through pristine rainforest. 6km, 3-4 hours, +420m elevation.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)

Climb into moorland zone reaching the spectacular Shira Plateau. 8km, 5-6 hours, +720m elevation.

Day 3: Shira 1 to Moir Hut (4,200m)

Cross Shira Plateau to rarely-visited Moir Hut on northern slopes. 11km, 5-7 hours, +700m elevation.

Day 4: Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp (4,020m)

Circle the northern side through remote wilderness with stunning views. 12km, 5-7 hours, -180m net elevation.

Day 5: Buffalo Camp to Third Cave (3,870m)

Continue northern circuit with panoramic views of Kenya and Mawenzi Peak. 8km, 5-6 hours, -150m elevation.

Day 6: Third Cave to School Hut (4,750m)

Ascend to high camp via the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. 5km, 4-5 hours, +880m elevation.

Day 7: Summit Day - Uhuru Peak to Mweka (3,080m)

Midnight summit push to 5,895m, then descend to Mweka Camp. 21km, 12-16 hours, +1,145m/-2,815m.

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (1,640m)

Final descent through rainforest to gate for certificate collection. 10km, 3-4 hours, -1,440m elevation.
